What they did with the worthless paper currency in the Weimar hyperinflation.  What they did not throw into the furnace as kindling, that is.
And here in the US, we are headed down that road ourselves.  Who was it, General Santyana who said “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.”?
But, the Helicopter (Ben Bernanke) prints on, thru QE1,2,3….and who knows.
